Your eyes brought me back to my days that are gone
The song does not open with its title but with memory: the beloved's eyes pull the singer backward before they pull her forward. Maqam Kurd, with its soft lowered second degree, gives this reminiscence a bruised tenderness — neither the ceremonial gravity of Huzam nor the brightness of Rast, but something closer to a private confession spoken aloud.
At the premiere in February 1964, this line carried extra weight: it was the first phrase Cairo heard from the long-awaited partnership of Umm Kulthum and Mohammed Abdel Wahab, broadcast live across the Arab world. Listeners knew they were witnessing two rival traditions of Egyptian music finally speaking in one voice.
They taught me to regret the past and its wounds
Ahmad Shafiq Kamel writes in Egyptian colloquial, not classical Arabic. Where a qasida would declaim, this line simply talks — the verb "they taught me" belongs to kitchen-table speech. That register lets a monumental singer sound suddenly intimate, and it marked a deliberate turn in what an Umm Kulthum evening could be.
All that I saw before my eyes saw you was a lifetime wasted
The song's most quoted hyperbole: a whole life dismissed as waste in a single breath. In concert Umm Kulthum shaped the line as an ascent, letting "a lifetime wasted" land on a suspended note that begged resolution — and the hall would erupt before she granted it. Erasure of the past becomes an act of devotion.
How could they count that time as part of my life?
A rhetorical question, and therefore an invitation. Tarab practice lives in lines like this: she would repeat the question with new melodic contours, each return slightly more incredulous, until the audience's answering roar became part of the performance. The recording preserves one night's choices among many.
You are my life, whose dawn broke with your light
The title line arrives as a resolution: after regret and erasure, love renames time itself. Life is redefined as beginning at the beloved's light — a dawn image that Abdel Wahab sets with a lift in the melodic line, as if the music itself were clearing into morning.
This refrain was the pivot of the "meeting of the clouds." Abdel Wahab's score famously admitted an electric guitar into the introduction — a scandal and a delight in 1964 — yet the refrain returns the evening to pure Kulthum territory: long-breathed phrases built for live repetition and variation.
How much of my life, before you, slipped past and was spent
The counter-line inside the triumph: how much life slipped past before the dawn arrived. The refrain's joy is built on an audit of loss, and in performance she let this line sag toward grief before lifting the title phrase again — celebration and lament sharing a single cadence.
O dearer than my days
O sweeter than my dreams
Take me to your tenderness, take me
The doubled imperative — take me, take me — marks the excerpt's emotional terminus: love no longer as memory or arithmetic but as escape, a plea to be carried out of existence itself. Abdel Wahab floats the passage on a rocking, lullaby-like figure, tenderness rendered as motion, and the parallel vocatives before it ("dearer than my days, sweeter than my dreams") give the plea the symmetry of an incantation.
Away from all existence, far away
